EuroMillions: UK player wins £109.9m jackpot

6 February 2022
Europia

A UK ticket-holder has won a £109.9m EuroMillions jackpot. The winning numbers were 3, 25, 38, 43, 49 and the lucky star numbers were 3 and 7. A UK player matched all seven numbers to scoop the top prize and lottery firm Camelot is urging players to check their tickets to see if they have won. While it is a huge sum of money, the win is not in the top five highest UK winners, with a British record of £170m claimed in October 2019. Andy Carter, senior winners’ adviser at The National Lottery, said: “What an amazing night for

Iceland whaling: Fisheries minister signals end from 2024

6 February 2022
Europia

Commercial whaling in Iceland could be banned within two years, after a government minister said there was little justification for the practice. The northern European country, an island in the North Atlantic, is one of few places to allow whale hunting. But demand for the mammals’ meat has decreased dramatically since Japan – Iceland’s main market – resumed commercial whaling in 2019. Iceland’s fisheries minister says whaling is no longer profitable. “Why should Iceland take the risk of keeping up whaling, which has not brought any economic gain, in order to sell a product for which there is hardly any

World War Two: Nazi guard’s son finds propaganda in loft

6 February 2022
Europia

“What do you expect in a loft? Some ancient Christmas decorations, maybe an obsolete computer… but definitely not Nazi propaganda posters.” Yet that’s what faced Craig Lambert from Barry, when he had to clear out his father’s attic after his death in 2019. Between 1951 and 1955 Royal Welsh Fusiliers Sargent-Major Colin Lambert was detailed to guard Hitler’s deputy, Rudolf Hess, during his life-long sentence at Spandau Prison in Berlin. Some of the artefacts with which he returned from Germany would remain a secret until his death. Dating from 1942, they include scenes justifying the London Blitz, and others extolling

Covid: New Zealand unveils phased border reopening plan

6 February 2022
Australia

New Zealand has announced a phased reopening of its borders, as the country starts to ease some of the world’s toughest Covid restrictions. Vaccinated citizens in Australia can go home from 27 February without needing to undergo state mandatory hotel quarantine. Jabbed citizens elsewhere will be allowed in from 13 March, said PM Jacinda Ardern. People will still have to self-isolate for 10 days but can do so at home. The announcement comes after growing criticism of Wellington’s controversial closed-border policy to keep out the coronavirus. New Zealand’s borders have been shut for nearly two years due to the pandemic.

Andrew Forrest: Australian billionaire launches criminal case against Facebook

6 February 2022
Australia

An Australian billionaire has launched a criminal case against Facebook, alleging the company failed to prevent scam ads that used his image. Andrew Forrest argues Facebook breached Australian anti-money laundering laws over the spread of cryptocurrency cons. He said it was the first time Facebook was facing a criminal case globally. Facebook’s owner, Meta, did not comment on Dr Forrest’s case but said it was “committed to keeping those people [scammers] off our platform”. Dr Forrest, who is chairman of miner Fortescue Metals, alleged Facebook had been “criminally reckless” in not doing more to halt the ads, which first appeared

HMB Endeavour: Row erupts over location of Cook’s coal ship

6 February 2022
Australia

The final resting place of Captain James Cook’s HMB Endeavour has been found, Australian experts say – a claim their US colleagues say is “premature”. On Thursday, the Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM) said a wreck in Newport Harbour, off Rhode Island in the US, had been confirmed as the ship. But the Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project (RIMAP) immediately said “many unanswered questions” remained. The British-built coal ship famously landed in eastern Australia in 1770. Before that, HM Bark Endeavour had sailed for several years around the South Pacific, after setting out from Plymouth in England. The vessel, then

Australia revisited – a country changed by Covid

6 February 2022
Australia

After eight years in the US, Nick Bryant returned to Australia to find a country that had retained many of its finest qualities. But it had also turned in on itself and become a more fractured nation. It was the final full day of our summer holiday – January is the August of the southern hemisphere – and our friend had returned to the beach, in the golden hour of the late afternoon, to capture a few last snapshots. By then, the sands had largely emptied. The sea looked too rough to swim in. But over the crash of the

Australia politics: Deputy keeps job despite calling Scott Morrison a liar

6 February 2022
Australia

Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce has said he offered to quit after calling the prime minister “a hypocrite and a liar” in a text. Mr Joyce apologised after learning that the message – sent last year and passed to a former staffer of Scott Morrison’s Liberal Party – was being made public. The text was dated 22 March, before Mr Joyce took on his current role. Rejecting his resignation, Mr Morrison said: “We all have our frailties and none of us are perfect.” Mr Joyce, 54, told reporters on Saturday: “I want to apologise to the prime minister… I

Women’s Ashes: Australia beat England by five wickets to seal series win

6 February 2022
Australia/Cricket

Australia sealed an Ashes series victory with a game to spare thanks to a five-wicket win over England in the second one-day-international in Melbourne. From 40-1 after 10 overs, England lost six wickets for 28 runs before being bowled out for 129 with almost five overs unused. Ellyse Perry picked up 3-12 and Tahlia McGrath continued her fantastic Ashes series by taking 3-4 in 3.2 overs. Left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen took the key wickets of Nat Sciver, who struggled to get going with eight off 25 balls, and England captain Heather Knight, for 18, in consecutive overs. A steady 39-run

Parrots for sale: The internet’s role in illicit trade

6 February 2022
Asia

Row after row of thin barred cages hold brilliantly coloured birds whose screeches fill the air with a deafening noise. Faiz Ahmed sits at a desk, oblivious, as he turns to a team of undercover BBC News journalists. He’s busy with his business of importing and selling birds. It’s a popular line of trade in Bangladesh, where he’s based, particularly among people with connections and money to invest. The conversation had started over the purchase of legal captive-bred parrots, but turned to a particular species, the African grey. “Wild grey parrots are good. Many people are breeding from wild ones,”
